Ancient Turtles Were Huge

At the dawn of the Holocene era, about 10,000 years ago, turtles as big as this one still existed on Earth.

Strabo's Geographica: "The Chelonophagi live under cover of turtle-shells, which are so large that they are used as boats..."

I had assumed that coracles were meant, but now have to reconsider.
